Harry Braverman, in Labor and Monopoly Capital points out that the current bourgeois statistical category, "service worker", is too broad – most of them are producing a physical commodity. A service worker by Harry's definition is one for whom the "useful effects of" her labor cannot take shape in an object (p 360). So for example a restaurant worker who prepares a meal is a production worker not a service worker, and even transportation workers – including waiters – are production workers, because an object here is not the same as an object there.
