If people who are poor, without income or other assets, own property they will in due course sell their property in order to meet living expenses. Schemes such as Mision Vivienda (Mission Housing) in Venezuela attempt to mitigate this reality by restricting the right of residents to alienate their property.[1]

Efforts by the opposition to make social housing freely alienable risk displacement of shanty town residents who are housed in apartments built by the socialist government. The freedom to sell touted by the opposition disingenuously ignores the dynamics which result when poor people, who do not have the the basic necessities of life, own alienable property.
